Thank You for the Love You Give Me

By Cathy Yarbrough

I have just retired and have no one living with me. I have always wanted a bird, but felt they would be neglected with 3 kids and work. I found an ad for a Sun conure and went there to see him. He was in a tiny cage screeching at his owner. She had 15 cockatiels flying free, and 2 Greys. She said Sunny used to be her baby till she fell with him one day and he hurt his head. All the time she was talking to me, Sunny was chatting also. He was telling me "You're pretty", and "Hello", plus the unknown chatting he does while I am on the phone. Anyway, this lady then mentioned that Sunny had a previous owner who had blown cigarette smoke in his face!

Well, I had to get him outa  there, so I did. He had a larger cage included in his price and he loves it. I gave him a few days to get used to my home, then just opened the door. He came straight to my head. He rode there a few days and then ventured to my shoulder. I named him Sunny and continually sing that song to him. He dances and preens, hangs from the top and swings. He now flies to me on the couch where I scratch, pet, rub. He sometimes falls asleep there. He has brought such sunshine into my home. He's just a big baby and I wish I knew more of his history. It doesn't matter, except that I think he is needing constant reassurance from me. I have to put him in his cage when little ones are here (grandbabies). He flies to their heads ( I think to be friends), but they duck and run, which upsets him.

Now, I am dealing with something that is my fault.  I left him with my daughter while I went on a 3 day vacation. I came back and he is pretty upset. She said he bit them all...from his cage, while they were trying to pet him. We came home and the first day, all he did was screech at me. This morning I just opened the door, and we are starting over. He got on my head, let me pet him a little, and is now sitting on the couch back looking at me. He's already picked off 3 of the pretty "toys" that button my shirt, but he can do anything as long as we get back to where we were. I love him dearly and tell him constantly. I guess I'll stop the vacations, because this little guy has had enough trauma and I should've been more sensitive to that.
